Check the emails. Save them as PDFs.
Email Exporter for Gmail is a free Chrome extension that saves the Gmail conversations you choose as PDF or Markdown files on your computer. Check the boxes in Gmail, click Export, and the files land in your Downloads folder, named by the date of each email.
It’s made for keeping records: invoices, contracts, client threads and receipts. The PDFs hold real text, not pictures of the page, so you can search them and AI assistants can read them.
Features
- Saves the whole conversation, every reply included
- One file per conversation, with each email on its own page, or one file per email
- PDFs with real, searchable text
- File names that start with the email’s date, like
2026_10_25-New sign-in to your account.pdf, with the time added when two names would match - Optional Markdown copies for notes apps and AI tools
- Saves to Downloads or a folder inside it that you name, or asks where to save each file
- Exports one conversation or many at once
How to use it
- In Gmail, search for what you want.
- Check the box next to each conversation you want to save, or open a single conversation.
- Click the Email Exporter icon in Chrome’s toolbar.
- Choose PDF, Markdown or both, then click Export.
While it works, Chrome shows a bar saying the extension “started debugging this browser.” That’s normal: it’s how Chrome lets an extension make PDFs without opening the print dialog. Leave the bar open, and it goes away when the export finishes. You can close the extension’s window while it runs.
Private and straightforward
There are no accounts, ads, analytics or subscriptions. Everything happens in Chrome on your own computer, and your emails are never sent to us or to any server.
When you install it, Chrome warns that the extension can “read and change all your data on all websites.” That warning comes with the permission Chrome requires for saving pages as PDFs without the print dialog. Email Exporter uses it only on a hidden Gmail tab, only while an export is running. For details, read the Privacy Policy.
Availability
Email Exporter for Gmail has been submitted to the Chrome Web Store for review. An install link will be added here once it’s published.
Support and compatibility
Email Exporter works in Google Chrome on a desktop or laptop, with Gmail in the browser, including Google Workspace accounts. It doesn’t work in the Gmail phone apps or other email programs.
- It saves the checked conversations on the current page of Gmail’s results. For a big export, do one page at a time.
- Attachments aren’t saved yet. Download those from Gmail as usual.
- Words that are part of a picture in an email, like a banner or poster, are saved as part of that picture, not as text.
